In America we live in a Capitalist society. Wealth and the means of producing wealth are privately owned. This economic system has enable thousands if not millions of people to become extremely wealthy. There are however millions of people living in poverty working minimum wage, living on welfare, without health insurance etc.
Do you think the government should do more to lift people out of poverty or should people take individual responsibility and lift themselves out of poverty?
Do you think America is a meritocracy(people achieve wealth and success because they are talented)?
How can the people of South West Philadelphia help themselves succeed in the American Capitalist society?

Hello Mr.Turner this is Yvette from room 414.First of all,I don't think that regular people should be held accountable for something that the government does.I think that the government should be responsible for people being in poverty because they send all of the good jobs overseas and people over here in the U.S can't get the opportunity.Also the gov't always has their hand in working class citizens money making people even more broke.Therefore,the gov't should be held responsible and they should do more to stop and to prevent poverty.I do think that America is meritocracy because in order to be recognized in America,you have to have a special talent or create something to benefit this country.It's unrealistic for someone to become rich by just doing nothing.The people in SWP could help themselves in order to succeed in this country by just finding simple things in order to provide for themselves and their families instead of hanging on the streets.Try a newspaper route or anything just don't stay on the streets.Get a real JOB!!!

i do think that the government should lift people out of poverty because in some cases it wasnt their fault it was the governments.And yes i do think America is meritocracy, in my opinion people will pay anything to entertain themselves whether its buying an high tech. ipod or buying a new chris brown cd(with talent come wealth in some way)
